What’s Covered in The Sewing Classes?

MODULE 1: Getting To Know Your Machine
So many times we hear things like “I wish I could sew” or “I have my grandmother’s machine, but I don’t know how to use it” or “maybe one day I’ll learn.” Well then, this module is a perfect start! Every sewing machine is different… but the same. Think of it like a car. You can get a used one, whether an antique one, your basic model, the top of the line luxury model or something in between. They all get you from A to B (we mean sew).

However, each one also has have different features, top speeds and feel different as you sew with them. In this module, you will discover techniques on how to work your sewing machine, including threading it and the ever challenging tension control.

MODULE 2: Sewing Techniques
Learning to sew and then improving on what you learned can be a challenge. However, if you’re well-equipped it can be a very rewarding and fun journey. This module is a necessary follow-up to Module 1 and crucial ground work to sewing. Believe it or not, sewing in a straight line is not as easy as you think, not to mention corners… But with our secret tips and techniques, it will be a breeze!

MODULE 3: Sewing Tools, Threads, Bobbins & Fabric
This is a fun module where we cover everything gadgets and fabric! Obviously, the range of supplies are endless and the more clued up you get, the more you can expand your collection (providing you have the storage space of course!). In this module, we cover the necessity and luxury tools which will make sewing easy. We also discuss what threads to use on which fabric and all things bobbin.

Then we also cover FABRIC! Different types of fabric are used for garment and craft sewing. Nothing is going to get sewn without any fabric… And with such a huge variety out there, it’s rather confusing to know which to use and when. In general, you get two broad categories or types of fabrics. These obviously have many variations in their respective categories, but all fabrics fall into either of these: woven or knitted. In this module we cover both, including tips on how to keep it from shrinking.

MODULE 4: Hems, Seams & Corners
Beginners might think that once they’ve sewn a seam, the work is done. Not true! It’s important to finish your seams in order to prevent raveling. Also, it makes the inside of your work look just as neat and tidy as the outside. Seams can also be bulky on projects with corners and curves and once you turn your item right side out, you’ll be fighting to make it lay flat. In this module we cover all things hems, seams and corners!

MODULE 5: Temporary & Permanent Fabric Fasteners & Trims
Fabric fasteners for clothing are both functional and decorative. Fasteners help reinforce a section of a garment and add structural integrity. Expand your notions knowledge with our overview of simple permanent fasteners and learn how to attach buttons, elastic and zippers. We also cover temporary fasteners. These take on many forms, including basting (used to hold fabrics in place before permanent machine stitching is applied). Also, explore trim types, making your own bias binding and piping and try out fun trim techniques!

MODULE 6: Pockets
Often overlooked, pockets can make or break a garment. They’re not just practical in the sense that they can hold your phone or keys, but they also add colour and interest to clothing and are always a fashion favourite. In this module we share techniques for adding a pocket bag to any garment that you’re making from scratch, or even an existing garment in your wardrobe. From aligning the pockets perfectly to finishing the edges neatly!

MODULE 7: Sleeves
When the sleeves are sewn well, you might not notice them. But if you have a sleeve with any unintended puckers or gathers, it can easily detract from the overall look. Sewing patterns have different amounts of ease sewn into the sleeve cap and it can take a little practice to learn how to sew them. There are a few other steps to follow (both before you sew in the sleeve and after the sleeve is sewn in the armhole) which will ensure that your sleeves are the smooth supporting players you want them to be. This module covers everything about sewing sleeves!
